Tenor Saxophonist,
Michael Karn, made his headline recording debut on the Criss Cross Jazz label
in 1998. The recording, Head to Head, featuring Karn and Jerry Weldon on
tenor saxophone, Bruce Barth on piano, Peter Washington on bass and Bill
Drummond on drums, has received significant airplay on New York jazz radio, kin
particular WBGO -
Newark.
Karn's follow-up
release on Criss Cross, tentatively titled, In Focus, was recently
recorded and features Peter Bernstein on guitar, David Hazeltine on piano,
Reuben Rogers on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. It is slated for
release in May 2000.
Karn, a
New York City resident and performer since 1991, has appeared with Joe Lovano,
Jimmy Cobb, Junior Mance, Andy Bey, Irene Reid, Larry Goldings, Jim McNeely,
Charlie Persip, Mel Lewis, Valery Ponamerev, Michel Petrucianni, and Michael
Weiss. Michael currently is featured in the band on organ master Charles
Earland, and appears on Earland's newest CD, to be released in May
2000.
Karn studied saxophone
at New York University with Joe Lovano. As a student, he performed with the
school's top ensemble, toured and eventually recorded the album, Last Stop
Grand Central.
From NYU,
Michael joined the Ray Charles Orchestra, touring the United States, Europe,
and Japan. Spending 1988 and 1989 with Ray, Michael appeared at such venues as
the Blue Note, The Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center, and the Wolftrap Center for
the Performing Arts.
Born on
July 12, 1966, Karn began playing jazz in high school winning awards at several
competitions and appearing in the 1984 New York High School All State Jazz
Ensemble.
Additionally, Karn
is an active educator, serving on the jazz faculties at New School University,
New York University, and The Mannes College of Music.
